numb & mole

>οn the occasion of the exhibition, andreas kassapis, created a mural which moves between narration and symbolism. in other words, it tends to narrate a story but that story remains a secret. the figures, a basic element in his work, in some ways act as "ideal" self-portraits. each figure does not compose a different character but defines the same character in different esoteric - psychological situations, which are in turn defined by the elements-symbols which are inscripted onto and around them. the figures and the symbols therefore act as narrative but at the same time also give meaning to one another. as he mentions 'i am not able to define the meanings of this specific mural because they are as unclear to me as they are to the viewer. this is because the process from which my images occur does not allow nor does it aim in the production of a solid meaning but more so in the reproduction of the same contradictory feeling from which they derive. i can only speak of references from the iconographic tradition of eastern europe, the culture of comics and that of graffiti'.
>diamantis sotiropoulos presents his new work which comprises of large scale drawings and a video animation. the mole is used metaphorically to describe the person who is in spiritual darkness and uses violence as an exercise of authority. the symbolism which has traditionally been applied to the iconography of animals acts as a code in all four works which have a strong anthropocentric character. mole, 2006 inverts the historical and traditional imposition of the strong animals (horses etc) over the phenomenically weak ones (mice etc) who in this work paradoxically dominate. the futility of such an exercise is obvious in the struggle between the two dogs. in the conflict (the strong did what they could and the weak suffered what they must, 2006) the dog that prevails appears to be the strongest. however the illusion of strength is simply a trap which covers up that both dogs are tied up. in reality no one is absolutely free.the story of samson and delilah (samson and delilah, 2006) acts as a universal symbol of the deception of man through love. the video (gravity, 2006) gives the answer.
