something important, something black

>>There’s two of us at the core but we see our extended family of music obsessives as being a part of us –that’s why we invite people to guest on the radio show and to play at events we put on as we want to keep everyone with a common goal locked together. Our background is the same as a lot of people’s, growing up illegally taping off the radio; saving up pocket money to buy the latest 7”; anxiously waiting to be old enough to see, hear and consume more music!
>>Going out mainly, it’s usually a surprise –sometimes we’ve been part of a collective event like the Meet Market and heard other DJs by chance that have grabbed us –then we’ll usually go and sweet talk them into giving us content for a radio show and it goes from there! There’s good and bad people the world over and Athens is no different; it’s a little city with a lot of people in it but you can’t deny its unique character.
>>Like Erykah says ‘Music is Everything’! We often talk about whether it’d be better to lose our sight or our hearing (yeah I know!) and both agree that it’d have to be sight – imagine going from listening to music all day everyday to not being able to hear? It’d be seriously awful. I remember watching ‘It’s All Gone Pete Tong’ –I think it’s meant to be a comedy but I was almost in tears at points! It’s not really luck anyway to do something you like– you have to make a lot of sacrifices –at the point you decide you have to cut back your day job hours to make more room for your ‘hobby’ you don’t know if it’ll pay off –it’s a risk and you have to make it work for you as there’s no other option.
>>I don’t know if you can encapsulate the feeling that music gives you into a little paragraph but I suppose it’s the memories mainly –when everything reminds you of music and music reminds you of everything.
>>What's a favourite at the moment? The Elzhi album! We’ve been banging it out for weeks now and are nowhere near to being over it. It’s so massive, his delivery has really come of age and the Black Milk beats are homage to Dilla in every way. Otherwise we have to mention Yaw – he’s a Chicago based singer/rapper who’s been working with Ron Trent – when his stuff drops people are going to go crazy –he describes himself as being a vessel blessed with a voice and that’s pretty much all you need to say. On a Greek tip Thomey Bors – check his track Near Jupiter – next level beats from some homegrown talent!
>>Everywhere can be black; we just happen to be Athenians at the moment – probably one of the best things about this city is that no one is from here (really) so it can be whatever you make it for yourself. We make it black. Black music is also a universal language and as Athens becomes more and more blessed by multi-culturalism it makes more and more sense.
>>Well we opened the season for the Outro girls at Yoga Bala so there’ll be a couple more things there, plus we’re doing a new night at K44 called 100bpm which is all about the downbeats –where hip hop, experimentalism, dub step, leftfield and downbeats meet and mingle. In terms of guests we’re bringing PPP (Platinum Pied Pipers) at the beginning of October along with the QNQ boys, then on the 18th of October we’re madly keyed up to be bringing IG Culture to Athens –he’s like the corner stone of London’s black music underground and will sound massive on the Jazz Upstairs system –it’s going to be amazing!
